How to Care for Your Icelandic Wool

Icelandic wool is an incredible natural material. It has kept people warm in Iceland for centuries in rain, wind, and snow.

The wool is breathable, naturally water resistant, and does not hold odors easily. Because of this, wool does not need to be washed very often.

Most of the time, fresh air is all it needs. Taking good care of your wool garments will help them last for many years.

Air Before Washing

Wool loves fresh air. Instead of washing your sweater, hang it outside or in a well ventilated place for a few hours. This removes odors and refreshes the fibers. In Iceland this is how people have cared for wool for generations.

Remove Small Stains

If your garment gets a small stain, it is often enough to rinse the spot gently with cold water or clean it by hand. Try to avoid washing the entire garment unless it is really necessary.

Washing Your Wool Garment

If your sweater needs washing:

  • Wash by hand or use the wool program on your washing machine

  • Use cold water or max 30°C

  • Use a mild wool detergent (enzyme-free)

  • Wash gently and avoid strong spinning

  • Wash wool garments separately

Avoid bleach and fabric softeners.

Drying

Never tumble dry wool.

Instead:

  • Gently press out excess water

  • Lay the garment flat on a towel to dry

  • Shape it back to its original form

Hanging a wet wool sweater can stretch the fibers.

Pilling

Small fibers can sometimes appear on the surface of wool garments. This is normal.

You can remove them gently by hand or with a wool comb.

Make It Last

Wool garments are made to last for many years.

If your sweater gets damaged, we encourage you to repair it instead of replacing it. Wool is one of the easiest materials to mend.

Taking good care of your wool means it can accompany you on many adventures for a long time.

A Final Tip from Iceland

In Iceland, many people say the best way to care for a wool sweater is simple:

Wear it often.
Air it outside.
Wash it rarely.
